Postdoctoral scholarship - Imaging human diabetogenesis
Umeå Center for Molecular Medicine (Umeå University, Sweden) invite applicants for a postdoctoral scholarship to study human diabetogenesis by advanced optical 3D imaging.
The possibility to obtain combined information about 3D-spatial, quantitative and cellular/molecular parameters such as islet (ß-cell) mass, cellular identity, immune infiltration etc., at cellular resolution in larger volumes of human pancreatic tissue has the potential to significantly enhance our understanding of diabetes pathophysiology. We have recently developed methods that enable high resolution optical 3D scans of essentially any antibody targeted epitope of choice, throughout the volume of the human pancreas. Implementing these protocols, we have identified a number of novel features in conjunction with different T1D and T2D diabetes conditions. We are now in the process of elucidating the significance of these (and other) observations, and for this purpose we want to strengthen our team with a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher.
We offer a postdoctoral scholarship for two years (tax free stipend at a fixed amount of 28 000SEK/month, approximately 2600 EUR/month, financed by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation) to study pathophysiological changes in the pancreas from diabetic donors and to elucidate mechanistic aspects behind these observations. We will provide the candidate with the possibility to use a multidisciplinary approach in which 3D imaging by optical projection tomography and light sheet fluorescence microscopy will play a central role, but access to a broad range of infrastructure for molecular and cell biology approaches will be provided. Of note, for conduction of the project we have obtained a unique collection of intact human pancreata from diseased non-diabetic, T1D and T2D donors of different gender, age and disease histories. We also have access to pancreatic cancer biopsies and a putative project involves elucidating the link between T2D and pancreatic cancer. With this material at hand, we are also open for innovative project ideas by the candidate. The research will take place in an international research environment with access to state of the art equipment within most fields of the life sciences. We particularly welcome candidates with a strong background in diabetes research and/or candidates with previous experience in optical 3D imaging approaches.
More info about the lab can be found here: https://www.umu.se/en/research/groups/ulf-ahlgren2/
Tentative start day is the 1st of March, 2023 but can be sooner (desirable) or later upon agreement.
Competence requirements
To be eligible for the scholarship you should have a PhD, or be in the very final stages of your PhD, in molecular biology, biomedicine, molecular medicine or related disciplines. We are primarily seeking applicants with experience in diabetes research that are familiar with the pancreatic constitution and with a strong background in cell and molecular biology. Previous experience with optical 3D imaging techniques is a merit. You can consider yourself a strong applicant if you: i) are the first author of at least two papers in high quality international journals; ii) have a genuine motivation for scientific research; iii) consider yourself a problem-solver person, someone who enjoys challenges and is determined to succeed; iv) have high standards for honesty, respect and collegiality. We expect the candidate to be able to work independently, however, being able to perform as part of a team is crucial. Good oral and written communication skills in English are required.
The application
Interested candidates should send a singlePDF file composed of i) a cover letter (<1 page), ii) CV (2 pages max), iii) a complete publication list, iv) the contact information of 3 references (preferably one of whom should be your PhD advisor), and v) copies of the latest degree certificate(s). The opening sentence of your cover letter should state how many publications you have and on how many of those you are the first author.
Submit your application as aPDF marked with “P-doc UCMM” in the subject field directly to Ulf.Ahlgren@umu.se. The application must be written in English.
Applications are continuously evaluated until a suitable candidate is identified but not later than Feb 28, 2023.
