Your mission:

The DLR Institute of Vehicle Concepts researches, develops and evaluates new vehicle concepts and technologies in light of future demands on the transportation system.

The Institute of Vehicle Concepts] in Stuttgart offers a Master's Thesis: Transition of urban mobility concepts – evaluation of chances and obstacles for market success and application of Small Electric Vehicles (SEV) in urban surrounding shall be evaluated by answering the following research questions:

How well informed are consumers about SEV models, technical and regulatory issues for owning/using a SEV (taxation, drivers licence, etc.)?

What is the background and motivation behind a decision to purchase a small electric vehicle (e.g. Renault Twizy)? What are main hindering reasons not to purchase an SEV?

Do consumers consider traffic restrictions in urban areas as probable to come and how do they influence purchase decisions?

Which kind of financial or regulatory incentives (e.g. infrastructure, free or dedicated parking) enhance the attractiveness of SEV from the consumers point of view?

Extent of the analysis:

vehicle type: three- and four-wheel small electric vehicles (L-category and beyond)

research area: worldwide with focus on Europe, USA and Asia (China, Japan, Korea)

period considered: present status and scenarios until 2030

Approach:

research and analysis of existing studies regarding use of SEV and incentive measures for SEV

research and analysis of policy and legal trends concerning traffic induced problems in metropolises (air quality, congestion, greenhouse gas emission). Overview of adopted and planned actions.

identification of driving forces and opposing interests regarding a higher market share of SEV (manufacturers, car dealers, institutions, municipalities, environmental and conservation organisations, etc.)

survey on buyer decisions related to SEV and preferences regarding shared vehicles (assessment of importance and estimated fulfilment of requirements like safety, flexibility, costs, environmental aspects, image, driving pleasure, innovative spirit, etc.)

Your qualifications:

course of study: political science, transport science, transport engineering, geography, or similar

very good English skills

experience in preparing and conducting a survey preferable

interest in innovative/transformative mobility concepts
